For those of you who didn’t already know, through the generosity of Meridian readers, we were able to raise over $200,000 (matched by an anonymous donor for a total of over $400,000) for the building of a school in Bihar for the children of the leprosy-affected. Recently a reader shared with us the inspiring story of a family that went the extra mile in their contribution to this building project in Bihar. John Darden and his wife both heard about the project separately as they listened to Meridian’s Come, Follow Me podcast, and both felt moved to give.
John came to his wife to tell her he wanted to donate. She said she also felt like giving, but one-upped his idea. Rather than just send in a small check of their own money, she wanted to do more! So, she suggested they do a small fundraiser *for* this fundraiser, by hosting a bake sale at their home.
Their three daughters all love to bake, so it seemed like a natural fit. They spent days baking, put the event on Facebook and invited all their friends, got some people to donate baked goods to sell as well, and then turned their home into a little bake shop over the weekend.
People came and bought their goods and made donations, and by the end of the day they had made $655 dollars! Then, another man gave John a check for an additional $500 to go towards this campaign as well. This was such an amazing illustration of the power of a few energized people to leverage their resources and contribute to changing the world.
We at Meridian feel so grateful and inspired that this family were moved enough by the plight of those in Bihar to invest, not just money, but time and heart to raise money and help spread the message. Thank you!
